OpenAI

Founded 2015 · San Francisco, United States

OpenAI was founded on 11 December 2015 in San Francisco as a nonprofit by Sam Altman, Elon Musk, Greg Brockman, Ilya Sutskever, Wojciech Zaremba, John Schulman, and other AI researchers, with the mission of ensuring that artificial general intelligence (AGI) benefits all of humanity. In 2019, a capped-profit LLC subsidiary was established alongside the nonprofit, enabling the first billion-dollar investment from Microsoft. In November 2022, OpenAI launched ChatGPT, which became the fastest-growing consumer application in history (1 million users in 5 days). In October 2025, a recapitalisation was completed: the nonprofit was renamed the OpenAI Foundation (holding a 26% stake in the for-profit entity), and the subsidiary was converted into a public benefit corporation (PBC) called OpenAI Group PBC. Following the recapitalisation, Microsoft holds approximately 27% of OpenAI Group PBC. Key products include: ChatGPT (AI assistant; 500 million weekly users as of March 2025), the GPT-4o/4.5/5 model family, the o1/o3/o4-mini reasoning model series, the DALL-E image generator, the Sora video model, and the Whisper speech recognition model. In March 2025, OpenAI closed a record private funding round of $40 billion led by SoftBank at a valuation of $300 billion. In May 2025, the company acquired the startups Windsurf ($3 billion) and io ($6.5 billion, co-founded by Jony Ive). OpenAI is planning an IPO, expected in 2026–2027.
