Atlas is a bipedal humanoid robot developed by Boston Dynamics. The first version, funded by DARPA, was unveiled on July 11, 2013 and was hydraulically actuated. For more than a decade it served as a research platform for bipedal locomotion, dynamic balance and manipulation.
On April 17, 2024 Boston Dynamics officially retired the hydraulic version and on the same day announced its successor β the fully electric next-generation Atlas. The new design is smaller and lighter than its predecessor, with an extended joint range of motion (including a rotating head, hips and wrists) that exceeds human anatomy, and is engineered for commercial deployment.
The first deployment partner is Hyundai Motor Group, the owner of Boston Dynamics, which is running Electric Atlas pilots in automotive manufacturing environments. The robot remains a research and pre-production prototype and is not commercially available.
