Scale AI, Inc. is an American company headquartered in San Francisco, founded in 2016 by Alexandr Wang and Lucy Guo through the Y Combinator program. It originally focused on data annotation for computer vision applications and autonomous vehicles. Over time, the company expanded its offerings to include RLHF (Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback) services, large language model (LLM) evaluation, a generative AI platform (Scale GenAI Platform), and agentic systems for the defense and government sectors (Scale Donovan). The company serves enterprise and government clients including OpenAI, Google, Microsoft, Meta, General Motors, the US Army, and the US Department of Defense. Data annotation is outsourced through its subsidiaries Remotasks (computer vision, autonomous vehicles) and Outlier (LLMs). The SEAL (Safety, Evaluations, and Alignment Lab) laboratory conducts AI model research and testing. In May 2024, Scale AI raised $1 billion in a Series F round at a $13.8 billion valuation. In June 2025, Meta Platforms acquired a 49% non-voting stake for approximately $14.3 billion, valuing the company at ~$29 billion. Founder Alexandr Wang stepped down as CEO to join Meta, and was succeeded by Jason Droege. Scale AI remains an independent private company.
