xAI is an American technology company founded by Elon Musk on March 9, 2023, working in artificial intelligence, social media and technology. Since February 2026 it has been a wholly owned subsidiary of SpaceX following a $250 billion acquisition.

Its flagship products are the generative AI chatbot Grok, the Grokipedia online encyclopedia, and the social network X (formerly Twitter), acquired by xAI in March 2025 in an all-stock deal valuing X at $33 billion. xAI operates its own compute infrastructure, including the Colossus supercomputer in Memphis, planned to scale to at least one million GPUs.

The company was founded by a team of 11 AI researchers including Igor Babuschkin (formerly Google DeepMind). xAI has raised over $12 billion from investors including Andreessen Horowitz, Sequoia Capital, Lightspeed, Tribe Capital, BlackRock and Fidelity. In July 2025 it received a $200 million U.S. Department of Defense contract for military AI.
